Halong Bay
Situated in the North-East region of Vietnam, Halong Bay is a bay in the Gulf of Tonkin comprised of regions of Halong City, Quang Ninh Province, the township of Cam Pha, and a part of the island district of Van Don. Halong Bay borders Cat Ba Island in the southwest, the East Sea in the east, and the mainland, creating a 120 km coastline.

Vietnam Geography

Bounded by the warm waters of the South China Sea, Vietnam is in the southern corner of the Indochinese peninsula. To the country’s west are Laos and Cambodia, separated from Vietnam by the Annamite Mountains or the Truong Son Range, while to the north lies the great bulk of China. Vietnam itself is long and thin – just 31 miles (50 kms) wide at its narrowest – with an extensive coastline stretching from the Gulf of Tonkin in the north to the Gulf of Thailand in the south.

Vietnam Climate

Vietnam is large enough to have several distinct climate zones and located in both a tropical and a temperate zone. It is characterized by strong monsoon influences, but has a considerable amount of sun, a high rate of rainfall, and high humidity. Regions located near the tropics and in the mountainous regions are endowed with a temperate climate.

Markets in Vietnam

Countryside Markets:
Many communes in rural Vietnam feature countryside markets (cho que). There are two main types of countryside market: the fair and the evening market. Fairs are held periodically. For example, it may be held on days with the numbers three and eight, which would imply fairs on the 3rd, 8th, 13th, 18th, 23rd and 28th days of each lunar month. Major markets attract huge numbers of people.

Travel in Vietnam

With the rapid development of Vietnam’s infrastructure, the country’s internal transport system is improving at a fast pace, and becoming more convenient and affordable. Railway lines run from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, connecting several cities en route, before passing into China. Though reasonably comfortable, trains are probably the slowest mode of transport. Long-distance buses are faster, but most can be uncomfortable after a few hours, although the relatively new and expensive Express buses are comparatively luxurious. Most popular is the Open Tour bus system, which links major centers. For quick travel between major cities, the airline system is great, while ferries and hydrofoils connect many ports. Travelers can also hire a motorbike or a car and driver.
